Presbyopia & Astigmatism
Presbyopia and astigmatism can occur together. A lens that loses elasticity and an imperfectly rounded cornea can restrict affected patients even more than if only one of these visual impairments were present. The issues of presbyopia combined with the distorted vision caused by astigmatism create a complex visual disturbance that can be extremely limiting in daily life.
Treatment with glasses or contact lenses can be more complicated in such cases.

Treatment of presbyopia and astigmatism
Glasses or
contact lenses
Generally, treatment for astigmatism and presbyopia involves wearing glasses and/or contact lenses. However, especially with severe astigmatism, these methods may not provide optimal results for the patient. Depending on the individual’s lifestyle and leisure activities, glasses can be perceived as very disruptive and contact lenses along with their associated hygiene can be considered cumbersome. Over the years, the costs for glasses and/or contact lenses and their accessories can also accumulate.
Refractive
lens surgery
During surgery, the natural lens is crushed, removed and then replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. This lens is specially made after determining your values. Besides correcting presbyopia, its special design can also balance the irregularities of the cornea, thus correcting astigmatism.
These multifocal toric lenses optimally correct both visual impairments.
Multifocal toric intraocular lenses
Multifocal toric intraocular lenses allow for effective correction of presbyopia and astigmatism. The toric design ensures optimal correction of astigmatism, while the multifocal properties of the lens are designed to enable sharp vision at all distances.
These specially crafted lenses can correct visual impairments and improve colour and contrast perception. Additionally, most daily activities such as computer work, sports and reading can be performed without glasses after treatment. Approximately 95% of patients with multifocal toric IOL implants no longer need glasses post-treatment, significantly enhancing their quality of life.
