The different intraocular lenses

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implantable lenses used during cataract surgery to replace the eye’s natural lens. However, modern IOLs are not only used in cataract surgery. Thanks to them, it is also possible to correct other visual deficiencies, such as astigmatism or presbyopia.

Depending on the results of eye measurement and which visual impairment or eye disease is to be treated, different lenses are available.

Standard IOLs without additional function

With these standard monofocal lenses, you will be able to see well at a distance but will need glasses for near and intermediate vision.

This type of intraocular lens is implanted very frequently. It is part of a standard treatment. This monofocal IOL type cannot correct any additional vision defects such as astigmatism or presbyopia.

Comfort IOLs with depth of focus function

These lenses optimise your vision for the far and intermediate range. You will still need glasses for near vision.

These lenses are optimised not only for distances but also for intermediate vision, from approx. 60-200 cm. Therefore, the IOLs ensure an uncomplicated daily life, for example, while driving, shopping, working on the computer, or playing sports. Toric Comfort IOLs can also correct astigmatism.

Premium IOLs with additional features

These multifocal and/or toric lenses will optimize your vision at all distances and are designed to provide a high level of spectacle independance.

If you are very active and frequently change your focus, wearing glasses can be particularly bothersome. With multifocal premium lenses, you will only need glasses occassionally for reading or working on the computer in everyday life. Additionally, these lenses can correct other refractive errors, such as presbyopia or astigmatism.

Which of these different lenses is best for you will be determined by your ophthalmologist. After a thorough examination and considering your individual circumstances, you can receive personalised advice at your trusted practice and be recommended the lenses that suit you and your lifestyle best.
